Why Cornwall? By Cheryl Ingham
When I told friends last Fall that I was planning a trip to Ireland and Cornwall, inevitably I was asked “Why Cornwall?’ It’s likely everyone choosing to travel to Cornwall has their own individual reason, nonetheless, I was struck by how many were unaware of where it was or all it had to offer.
Before experiencing it for myself on Dacey’s fabulous tour, I could only describe the geography and vague impressions I had from novels of rugged cliffs overlooking the ocean and quaint villages. Most who viewed PBS could relate to scenes I’d mentioned from Poldark or Doc Martin. Few saw it as a travel destination – all the more reason for me to want to go there!
I am drawn to off-the-beaten path, less touristed places. I envisioned walking across wide green bluffs and gazing at the pounding surf below me. Maybe I’d tuck into a tiny shop for a cup of tea; that was enough to inspire me to search for a tour company that would provide those kinds of simple, authentic experiences. Little did I know then, how much more Cornwall truly would offer!
Now when asked “Why Cornwall?’ I’m filled with vivid images, many just as I’d first hoped, but so many more that were complete and delightful surprises. Beautiful gardens (and one from the future), grand country houses, prehistoric ruins, legendary castles, fishing villages, sandy beaches hugging a shore lined with art galleries. All of that was interspersed with walks through the countryside, and days that began and ended with hearty meals in lovely, charming lodgings. So much of what I saw I would not have discovered on my own, despite the extensive pre-trip research I usually do. Cornwall is a remote and hidden treasure, experiencing it to the fullest was only possible with a guide who’d lived there and loved the land. Dacey’s David Warner shared his knowledge of the history of each location we visited as well as his insider’s tips on what to do in our time-off, places to shop, walk, eat. We missed no opportunity to explore a special site or to laugh at his daily facts and jokes.
Circling back to “Why Cornwall?” For me, I made a promise to a dear friend that I would visit Cornwall and retrace a trip she’d taken as a child. I’d climb the steps to St Michael’s Mount for her and walk through King Arthur’s castle as if she were with me. I did that, and so much more, in her memory, and created one of my own to keep in my heart and to share (in words and 500 photos!) with those I love.
